Bretton
Bretton is an isolated hamlet high up on a gritstone ridge which rears up above the limestone plateau around. The view from here is splendid - it is said that on a clear day you can see for 30 miles.
The original turnpike road from Sheffield and Grindleford to Buxton went along this ridge, and an ancient packhorse way from Eyam to Hathersage passed nearby, so it is no surprise that the pub, the Barrel, is dated 1597.
There is a Youth Hostel nearby that is popular with those taking part in Peak District Walking and Peak District Cycling amoungst other outdoor activities.
